FIBA Tournament taking its toll on Fantasy Leagues

We’re going to have to remember this lesson for the future because it is bound to come up again…

Don’t pick players that played competitively during the offseason. Or, at the very least, carefully consider the pick before making it.

You might wonder why I might offer that crazy suggestion considering the fact that most of the top Fantasy players were ON one of those teams.

Fantasy Basketball Injury Update

The injuries are mounting.

We expected Kenyon Martin to be injured by now, out for the season with right knee surgery.

We expected Yao Ming to be injured for some of the season, but maybe not quite this long (out for 6-8 weeks with a fractured tibia).

We expected Shaq’s aging body to be out for a while (4-6 weeks after knee surgery).

Pick up Luther Head! Quick!

Statistics-wise, Luther Head has been doing pretty well for himself in a 6th man role. I picked him up in a few of my leagues where I was lacking a bit in three pointers. I’m usually wary about picking up non-starters, but Van Gundy has been playing him a decent number of minutes every night, and his statistics in those minutes have been very good.

Someone has to score the points

One of the things to which all Fantasy NBA team owners comes to a realization at some point in their lifetime is that no matter how bad a team is, someone has to score the points.

I had a strategy several years back that I was only going to pick players in the draft whose teams were in the bottom half of the league for wins. My premise was that the one or two good players on those teams score almost all of the points and the rest of the players, who are really more of role-players anyway, defend and collect rebounds but don’t take the shots. I didn’t stick to my guns all the way, but I did pick the majority from those teams and I did very well in points. (I did horrible in FG%, assists, and other categories, and learned that I needed to balance my team a little better.)
