I’m not sure what the Boston Celtics were thinking of when they inked malcontent Stephon Marbury to a contract.
Here are the reasons why this is NOT a good move:
- Team Chemistry – Stephon Marbury is not a role player. He doesn’t have the ego for it. Marbury’s teams have never done well, because Marbury is not a team player. He is certainly talented, even at his current age, but he isn’t a player that helps his team to win. Adding a major head-case like Marbury to a team that already has great team chemistry is a recipe for disaster. You might likely be able to point to this move as the one that keeps the Celtics from being able to beat the Cavaliers.
- Rajon Rondo – It’s one thing to tutor the starting point guard with a good all-around guy like Derek Fisher was able to do for Deron Williams in one year with the Utah Jazz. It’s quite another to bring in a ne’er-do-well like Marbury to be with and possibly tutor rising star Rajon Rondo. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett won’t have any problem with Marbury, but the young guys likely will — especially Rondo. Rondo’s numbers have vacillated between spectacular and mediocre (except in assists where his numbers have been very good all season), and I can’t see how Marbury’s influence can be anything but a distraction to the Celtic’s young point guard.
I thought the Celtics were certainly a bit of a long-shot to repeat with a great team (Los Angeles Lakers or any of eight other very good opponents) likely coming out of the West and the Cavaliers smashing opponents in the East, but this latest move smacks of desperation — a boggling idea considering that the Celtics are the defending Champions.
In my opinion, the Celtics just sealed the deal of being a “one and done” Champion with this bone-headed move.
