Analyzing the Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups Trade

The trade, as it has been recently stated on various basketball sports sites is as follows:

Let’s analyze this from a purely Fantasy Basketball perspective.

From a fantasy perspective, it isn’t likely that any player actually involved in this trade will see much of a change in their stats.

Antonio McDyess isn’t happy about this trade and might actually be waived by Denver. He is barely a fantasy factor, even in deep leagues, so this won’t affect many people anyway.

Chauncey Billups will most likely be playing point guard in Denver, which is the exact same position that he played in Detroit. He will likely get plenty of shots in Denver, even with Carmelo and J.R. Smith there, because Allen Iverson got plenty of shots.

Allen Iverson will probably be asked to play point guard alongside Rip Hamilton. Iverson has played point guard fairly well in the past, though he hasn’t seemed to like playing the position all that much. Detroit’s offense is used to the point guard taking a decent number of shots, so it’s likely that Iverson will fit in just fine offensively. If anything, his assists might improve by 1 or 2 per game, which would be a real blessing for Iverson owners.

As far as this trade affecting other players on the Detroit Pistons, no one’s numbers are likely to be affected in the least — except for perhaps a few more turnovers as players get accustomed to a new point guard.

Anthony Carter has been the current point guard for Denver, and in a limited number of games has been averaging a stellar 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists for the Nuggets. With Chauncey Billups likely taking that role, look for Carter’s minutes and stats to plummet. Unless of course, he is chosen to play alongside Billups, which I find unlikely.

With Anthony Carter taking the starting point guard spot for the first few games of the season, J.R. Smith was the odd man out. If Billups takes the starting point guard spot, look for J.R. Smith to be the favorite for taking the vacated two spot. J.R. Smith was picked up late in many leagues because he did so well as a sixth man last year. Look for him to have very good points and three pointers in the starting two guard spot if he wins that role.

If it isn’t Carter or Smith who gets the starting role, it will most likely be third year swing man Linas Kleiza. He has played well in spurts in the past and could perform very well as a starter. My bets, however, would be on Smith getting the nod.
