Fantasy Best and Worst of Free Throw Percentage in 2008

Like Field Goal Percentage, how much a free throw shooter affects a team, good or bad, is based on how many free throws are attempted and made (or missed). Therefore, you not only have to consider the percentage itself but also how many times they get to the charity stripe.

With that in mind, it is actually very hard to judge who the best free throw shooters in the league are because both of these facts have to be kept in mind, but here is my attempt to judge the 20 free throw shooters who will most help your team as well as the 5 most likely to hurt your team.

The Best

  1. Chauncey Billups - Chauncey made 91.8% of his 437 attempts to head this list. Chauncey has been a strong choice for a long time to help your Fantasy team in its free throws. This year will be no exception.
  2. Dirk Nowitzki - Making 87.9% of his 544 attempts makes Nowitzki an excellent choice in the first round.
  3. Kevin Martin - In limited games, Kevin Martin took 578 free throws and made 86.9% of them.
  4. Kevin Durant - Surprisingly enough, Durant makes this list after his rookie season by making 87.3% of his 448 free throws. Expect the number of attempts to increase in his second year in the league as he gets more comfortable.
  5. Kobe Bryant - Made 84% of his whopping 742 free throw attempts.
  6. Chris Bosh - Made 84.4% of his 559 free throw attempts.
  7. Yao Ming - In limited games, Yao Ming made 85% of his 406 free throw attempts. Assuming that he plays more games this year, his free throw percentage and number of attempts should both increase. He normally shoots a higher percentage.
  8. Jamal Crawford - Made 86.4% of his 381 free throw attempts, expect his attempts to increase this year under D’Antoni and with more minutes very likely.
  9. Paul Pierce - Made 84.3% of his 485 free throw attempts.
  10. Danny Granger - Made 85.2% of his 378 free throws. Expect the number of attempts to increase as more of the offense runs through him.
  11. Chris Paul - Made 85.1% of his 390 free throw attempts.
  12. Mike Dunleavy - Made 83.4% of his 403 free throw attempts.
  13. Manu Ginobili - Probably would have been higher on this list had he not been injured. Expect less attempts because he will be playing less games. Last year he made 86% of his 442 free throws.
  14. David West - Made 85% of his 353 free throw attempts
  15. Joe Johnson - Made 83.4% of his 379 free throw attempts
  16. Stephen Jackson - Made 83.2% of his 370 free throw attempts
  17. Caron Butler - Made 90.1% of his 262 free throw attempts in limited games. Assuming that he is healthy, look for a similar percentage but many more attempts and makes from the charity stripe.
  18. Allen Iverson - Made 80.9% of his 797 free throw attempts
  19. Corey Maggette - Made 81.2% of his 681 free throw attempts
  20. Amare Stoudemire - Made 80.5% of his 691 free throw attempts

The Worst

  1. Dwight Howard - Made only 59% of his league-leading 897 free throw attempts. Unfortunately, this will kill your team, so you really can’t pick him up if your rotisserie league includes free throw percentage. Like a few of the very poor free throw shooters of the past, Howard’s field goal percentage is higher than his free throw percentage.
  2. Eddy Curry - Made only 62.3% of his 300 free throw attempts in limited games. If he plays more games, look for this low percentage to be as much of a disadvantage as his high field goal percentage is an advantage.
  3. Emeka Okafor - Made only 57% of his 374 free throw attempts. Assuming that he stays healthy, his free throw attempts should increase again this year making him a serious liability to your overall free throw percentage. If his attempts stay constant, it is not too difficult to overcome his poor free throw percentage with a couple of good free throwers.
  4. Andrew Bogut - Made only 58.7% of his 322 free throw attempts. Assuming his number of attempts increases as he gets more and more comfortable in the NBA, Bogut could be a serious drain on your overall free throw percentage.
  5. Tracy McGrady - Made only 68.4% of his 358 free throw attempts. Along with his low field goal percentage, this makes McGrady untouchable for anyone who has percentages in their Fantasy Basketball league. Many critics point to these percentages as the reason why a McGrady team has never made it out of the first round, and looking at them in this light you have to agree that you can make a decent argument for this.

Assuming the leading Fantasy Team will somewhere close to 81%, as is usually the case in my leagues, players like LeBron James (71.2% of 771 attempts), Andre Iguodala (72.1% of 506 attempts), and Josh Smith (71.0% of 469 attempts) can also be troublesome and will have to be counteracted by high free throw percentages and high attempts if you hope to do well in your free throw percentage category. Players with as many misses as Dwight Howard, however, cannot really be overcome.
