It seems like, for the past several years, they have been saying that the dunk contest is back. Did it really ever leave? How can it be back this year if it was back last year? And the year before?
But, honestly. The judges are the best thing about the dunk contest this year.
I don’t get a charge about thinking about this year’s contestants. They might do some pretty nifty stuff, but the last really good dunks I can remember came from Vince Carter. That was pre-knee surgery, if I’m not mistaken.
We have had a few pretty good dunks since then, of course, but no dunker that I thought was that spectacular by himself.
I like the two minute rule that they are instituting this year, especially after the 500 missed dunks we witnessed last year by little Nate Robinson. Of course, they still allow two more dunks after the 2 minutes time limit, from what I am reading. In my option, that’s way too many.
Here is what they REALLY ought to do…
I’ve actually been mentioning these rules for years, thought this is the first time on this blog.
Fantasy Basketball Guy’s Dunk Contest Rules
Each dunker is given a certain period of time (I’d vote 90 seconds) to take as many dunks as they want. Whether they make or miss the dunk, they can do it again, as long as they are within the time limit. They have to take their LAST dunk though, so they can stop at any time and have it counted by the panel of judges. That way they are not penalized if a wimpy dunk happens to go in and they aren’t encouraged to miss one at the last second, just because it might not look good.
Here is what we get out of it.
Each player gets a couple of fun warm-up dunks for us to watch and ooh and ahh. Maybe a few nice windmills or tomahawks. The fun dunks are followed by a nice finale dunk, one that will be hopefully be extra good because they have warmed up.
With only 90 seconds, they won’t have so many dunks that they will be tired either.
We also don’t watch miss after miss after miss because they won’t have time to miss that many dunks if they only have 90 seconds to do it in.
