Denver – New York Brawl: A Fantasy Take

Now that David Stern has handed out the suspensions, which include 15 games to Carmelo and 10 games to JR Smith and Nate Robinson, we can start looking at this brawl from a Fantasy perspective.

Melo is going to be out until sometime toward the end of January, and JR Smith for close to as long.

Who is going to pick up the scoring slack in Denver?

Melo was the leading scorer in the league. JR Smith had to be the second highest scorer on the Nuggets, or at least close (without actually looking at the numbers).

As I have said before, Somebody Has To Score The Points. Teams score at least 80 – 90 points a game. Someone is going to step up, even if it is only for a month.

Marcus Camby has never been a very consistent scorer, although he is bound to add a few points per game to his average. Andre Miller has never been much of a scorer either. In fact, without Carmelo and JR to pass to, his assists may dip.

Watch the Denver Nuggets carefully. Someone is bound to have about a month of better than average games. Now’s your chance to find a short term scoring solution.

On the flip-side of the coin, all of New York’s starters were already benched for yet another blowout in Madison Square Garden. Nate Robinson was the only player with even a remote amount of Fantasy value who was suspended. That means that there probably won’t be a diamond in the rough who comes out in New York.

In fact, if you’re a conspiracy theorist, a lot of these accusations about Isiah Thomas orchestrating this don’t seem quite so far fetched. Except that he can’t even orchestrate his team, so that shoots that theory out of the water.

  1. Patrick Said,

Looks like AI will get to step up and score the points, for now. It’ll be interesting to see how it’ll work out when Carmelo comes back. I would guess JR Smith’s fantasy value is as dead a Philly’s playoff chances.
