Ranking steals in the draft can be a little tough because scoring techniques between roto-leagues can vary so much. If you have a roto-league that includes the standards as well as FG%, FT%, 3-pointers, and turnovers, take a look at these players. (I’m basing my picks on a 10-12 team league)
Rasheed’s percentages aren’t too hot, but he got 155 3-pointers, 130 blocks, and only 85 turnovers last year. None of his stats were exceptional, but all of them were good. Also, he played almost every game. Look to see more of Sheed with Ben Wallace gone. He might be available in the 5th round. If he drops that far, snatch him up.
2. Antawn Jamison
Jamison’s percentages aren’t too great either, but he played all 82 games, scoring 20 points per game. His 765 rebounds were exceptional. He also had 90 steals and only 137 turnovers last year. He is also worth a good look if he drops to the 4th round, and you should snatch him up if he drops farther than that.
3. Michael Redd
If Redd drops to the 4th round, he has fallen too far. His percentages are both exceptional. His 170 turnovers is relatively low. His 163 3-pointers and 2028 points last year were stellar. He isn’t one to help much in rebounds, assists, or blocks, but his steals aren’t bad.
4. Morris Peterson
Mo-Pete could drop as far as the 6th or 7th round, but his high free throw shooting (82%) and three pointers (177) could go a long way if you haven’t drafted for 3 pointers yet. With over 1300 points last year, he could help you out in that category as well, especially if you need another little boost. His turnovers were low, only 126 last season.
5. Shane Battier
Battier’s stats are never stellar, but he is another good guy for rounding out all of your stats. He played 81 games last year and shot 49%. He got some of everything and hardly any turnovers (90). His blocks (114) could be particularly helpful. He would be a good 6th or 7th round pick if available. Because of his type of play, don’t look for his move to Houston to change much with his play.
6. Kyle Korver
If Korver is available in the late rounds, like the 10th or so, and you are in need of 3 pointers, pick him up. He made 184 3-pointers last year and his percentages were good, especially for a long distance shooter. He had only 98 turnovers and made almost 1000 points.
7. Hedo Turkoglu
Another good late round draft, it’s hard to say how much time he will get. It really depends a lot on the health of the other players on Orlando, which normally hasn’t been very good. He has very high percentages, and last year made 114 3-pointers, 1165 points, and had good stats in other categories (including only 130 turnovers).
8. Andre Miller
Andre could fall into the 10th or later rounds, depending on the depth of your league. Don’t overdraft him, but if you have forgotten to get enough assists, his 674 from last year certainly bode well for another good year in throwing the ball to Carmelo. He had 106 steals and a 46% field goal percentage as well. His turnovers (256) were excessive, especially for a point guard, but if you aren’t doing too bad in that category he could be an exceptional late round pickup.
Honorable Mentions: Jason Kidd (if he falls to the 3rd round), Ben Wallace (4th), Chauncey Billups (3rd), Rashard Lewis (4th), Jason Terry (5th), Raja Bell (6th), Chris Webber (5th), Eddie Jones (10th), Derek Fisher (10th), Cuttino Mobley (10th), Stephen Jackson (10th), Radmanovic (11th)
Addendum: One thing that I want to add to this blog entry is that the stats these players had last year should put them a solid round or two higher in the draft for the high rounders or up to 4 or 5 rounds higher for some of the late rounders. I tried to pick the players with the largest discrepencies for their respective rounds. There are obviously many others, but most of them didn’t drop quite so far.
