It looks like Al Harrington may be firing his agent, if reports are to be believed. If that’s the case it may be the end of August before any team acquires the best free agent left on the market. (That’s pretty bad when the best free agent to talk about is Al Harrington.)
That doesn’t mean that no team is doing anything however. It just means that no team is picking up anybody more than sturdy backups to fill out their team.
The Dallas Mavericks recently signed Devean George, not a bad pickup at the price, and a decent defender to go along with their coach’s defensive push.
The San Antonio Spurs recently signed restricted free agent Francisco Elson away from the Denver Nuggets, who had plenty of able-bodied players at that position anyway.
Aaron Williams, the serviceable center, signed with the LA Clippers.
The Chicago Bulls signed Adrian Griffin, a decent veteran to go along with their young stars.
Sean Marks signed with Phoenix, probably a good pickup considering he wouldn’t have cost much and Phoenix needs more big bodies, to foul Shaq if nothing else.
The only trade of note in the last week or two came with sending Jamaal Magloire from Milwaukee for Steve Blake, Brian Skinner, and Ha-Seung Jin. I think to everyone that seems a pretty lopsided trade in Portland’s favor, but Magloire wasn’t needed in Milwaukee with last year’s first round pick Andrew Bogut sliding over to center and newly acquired Charlie Villanueva playing power forward. It wasn’t guaranteed that Milwaukee would be able to keep Magloire, especially if he wasn’t getting starter’s minutes. It’s not really guaranteed that Portland can keep him either, but to their credit they didn’t give up anybody significant in his acquisition.
