Utah Jazz sign Matt Harpring, trade for Derek Fisher

The Utah Jazz signed Matt Harpring for what is rumored to be a 4 year deal with $25 million.

Is he worth it?

He would be if he were healthy, which he never is. If I were Utah, I wouldn’t have made this move. They should have saved the money for another big body rather than signing back another injured swing man.

Don’t get me wrong. I like the guy. He is a great influence in the locker room, and he works hard every night that he is not sitting behind the bench in a suit. The problem is that he is ALWAYS sitting behind the bench in a suit. And at 30 years old, his health is not likely to suddenly improve.

They are also rumored to be dealing Devin Brown, Andre Owens, and Milt Palacio for Derek Fisher.

If you are not a Utah Jazz fan, you are saying, “Um, who did they trade for Derek Fisher? I don’t recognize any of those names.”

I think this is a good deal for the Jazz mainly because Derek Fisher, though probably paid too much in his current contract, is a clutch player and a hard-nosed defender on the perimiter. He will be a good example to the young players. By the time he is done with his contract, the rookies that the Jazz picked up this year will have had a good couple of years of quality minutes and will probably be ready to start. The four years remaining on his contract will be a good stop-gap until the Jazz’s young players are ready to start.

The other reason why I think picking up Fisher is a good move is because the Jazz didn’t actually give up anybody to get him.
